Job summary
We are currently looking for enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Band 6 Senior Staff Nurses to join the Private Patient Medical Day Unit (PPMDU) at the Royal Marsden in Chelsea. You will need to be a 1st level registered nurse, Demonstrable previous Oncology experience and experience in the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy is essential. Intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are desirable, however full training will be given. In addition you will possess excellent communication skills, be reliable, enthusiastic and an effective team member committed to providing the highest level of service for our patients. Main duties of the job
The band 6 registered nurse for Private Patients' (PP) MDU is an exciting role, which enables the delivery of a variety of skills within the outpatient department, Granard House (GH) MDU and Markus Private Care Centre (PCC), and Infusion (Supportive Therapy) Unit. The main roles and responsibilities include:

• To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
• To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.
• To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way.
• To assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct. There is an expectation for post holders: - To promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff. - To participate in Trust initiatives around infection control and care quality indicators.

Job responsibilities
Clinical Responsibility
These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the shift co-ordinator:

• To complete the first level assessment of the patients needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients undergoing diagnostic tests for suspected cancer as well as those diagnosed with cancer and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met. This will include:
• Checking patients vital signs, blood results, patient and height and weight.
• Counterchecking patients vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.

Communication

• To work effectively within GH Outpatient, Markus Private Care Centre, and Infusion and Supportive Care Unit (attending clinics, MDUs, MDTs, staff meetings as appropriate) ensuring an individualised, evidence-based service for each patient and their family.
• Maintain and promote effective communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team both within Chelsea and across the other RM sites, actively working towards improving communication within members of the multidisciplinary team.

Professional Development

• To participate in educational programmes offered to staff. To attend the induction programme, mandatory training, and teaching specific to the clinical area.
• To participate in an annual collaborative appraisal process to enable achievement of objectives and management of learning needs.

Leadership and Management Responsibility

• To help foster a supportive working environment and maintain staff morale.
• To coordinate and supervise a shift when requested with the support of the Sister/ Charge Nurse.

Customer Service

• Demonstrate and role model a highly professional manner with a commitment to deliver exceptional customer service and patient experience, ensuring the patient is looked after throughout their visit.
• Work effectively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure patient experience is enhanced and seen as a priority.

Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
Essential

• NMC Registration
• Evidence of ongoing professional development
• SACT Competent
• RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment

Desirable

• Qualification in oncology or speciality
• Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
• Recognised teaching qualification
• Leadership Training

Experience
Essential

• Experience in managing the deteriorating patient
• Experience in chemotherapy administration
• Experience in intravenous drug administration, CVAD access, cannulation and venepuncture
• Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job

Desirable

• Experience in Clinical Management
• Evidence of relevant teaching experience
• Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management
