Job summary
Candidates are invited to apply for the above post. We welcome applicants with a background in Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, or Surgery. The successful candidates will be appointed to a senior airway rota. So should have the confidence to manage airways independently or manage confidently until specialists arrive which is often obtained after having worked for extended periods in critical or emergency care.

All applicants must be eligible for full GMC registration.

Essential qualifications for this post include post graduate primary examinations or international equivalent. Ideally in anaesthesia or critical care but also in allied specialties.

UK based trainees seeking out of programme experience in Critical Care Medicine would be encouraged to seek prospective approval for Out of Programme Training from the relevant Royal College.

Previous critical care experience is essential for this post with experience of leadership roles alongside general critical care responsibilities. Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the hospital.

Main duties of the job
This post offers the opportunity to participate in a wide range of adult general intensive and high dependency care in a busy mixed medical/surgical ICU/HDU admitting in excess of 2,500 patients per year.

The hospital is a tertiary referral centre for the following medical specialities: Infectious & Tropical diseases, Thoracic Medicine, Acute Stroke, Oncology, Haematology, and the following surgical services: Upper GI; Endocrine, Head & Neck, Urology/ Andrology, Gynaecology and Colorectal. The Trust also has a busy maternity unit, and we work with our obstetric colleagues to manage high-risk pregnancies. We are a referral service for complex haematological and rheumatological conditions and you may see conditions routinely that are rarely seen elsewhere.

The role is required as the senior doctor on the unit during the day and night and being able to support and respond to both nursing and more junior colleagues. They will be supported by a resident consultant in the day and a responsive on call consultant at night.

Job responsibilities

We provide support & direct admission from our busy Emergency Department (which sees upwards of 130,000 patients annually), and we take complex external referrals. The department runs a 24/7 nurse led outreach service, which is supported by the ICU doctors. The department also runs a fortnightly critical care follow-up clinic.The unit has specialist interest in long term weaning, psychology of critical illness, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, infection control, peri-operative medicine & emergency medicine, and has expertise in areas such as echocardiography, diagnostic ultrasound, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, experimental, translational and health services research.Successful candidates will be supported to seek experience in these areas. As appropriate fellows and trainees will be supported in their preparation for the European Diploma of Intensive Care Medicine, and the Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine examination, as well as speciality exams in Anaesthesia, Medicine, or Emergency Medicine, through established educational collaboration with these departments at UCLH.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent MRCP, MRCS, MCEM, Primary FRCA or equivalent
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise.

Desirable
  • Final FRCA
  • Higher degree (e.g. MD or PhD
  • Master's degree

Experience

  • Previous critical care experience
  • Training and experience consistent with an ST3 or greater (or equivalent)
