Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Gastroenterology to work at registrar level. Duties will include active participation in the daily care of inpatients at the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital and will be responsible together with SpR and FY2/FY1s. Consultant cover is always available including a 24/7 on-call. You will be asked to cover Gastroenterology ward and participate with Medical on-call duties when required. The Trust has a firm commitment in improvement of the quality of patient care and enthusiastic candidate will benefit by getting involved in audit and quality improvement projects (QIPs) as well as existing educational and research initiatives.

Main duties of the job
Duties of this post will include active participation in the daily care of inpatients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The appointed candidate will cover Gastroenterology ward, and triage/referrals (on normal working day 0900-1700) and participate in Gastroenterology weekend on call (Saturday & Sunday 0900-1700). The appointed candidate will share these duties on a Gastroenterology Rota together with other SpRs, and IMT3s. This will be supported by consultant cover, which is on 24/7 on-call Rota basis. The post offers particularly good experience of the care of all patients that present to the gastroenterology ward (general gastroenterology/hepatology, acute gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, and intestinal failure). Other duties include attendance at outpatient clinics, and endoscopy.

An enthusiastic candidate will benefit by getting involved in audit & quality improvement projects (QIPs), delivering educational sessions and participating in research initiatives. This post will be ideal for candidates seeking NTN for Gastroenterology for enhancement of the candidate career portfolio. This post is also particularly good for those wishing to gain broad experience in Gastroenterology in preparation for the European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology and Hepatology (ESEGH).

Job description
Job responsibilities
Active educational support, tailored to the individuals' experience and needs, will be provided through an assigned educational supervisor. There are ample educational activities, and for the appropriate candidate, there will be opportunities to develop further subspeciality in Gastroenterology e.g. IBD, endoscopy, and/or intestinal failure. Depending on candidate's experience and interest the post also offers excellent opportunity in endoscopy training ranging from diagnostic Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy and emergency endoscopy for example GI Bleed. There are weekly activities including journal club, IBD-MDT, GI Bleed MDT, GI cancer MDTs, and Liver MDT. Projects to gain research funding towards advancement gastroenterology/endoscopy projects will be encouraged and supported.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Any basic medical qualification eligible for registration with the GMC

Experience
  • 24 months post FY2 level
  • Appropriate experience
  • Competence in the management of acutely ill adults
