Job summary
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic General Internal Medicine Consultant with a Specialist Interest to join our dynamic department as part of service expansion. This post presents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing department practicing from a state-of-the-art University hospital.

The successful appointee will join the existing consultant body in delivery of high-quality inpatient and outpatient provision General Internal Medicine services to this large Trust, incorporating the University Hospital in Coventry, and St Cross Hospital in Rugby. The post holder will also be supported to provide care in a specialist service within UHCW. The post holder will be expected to provide patient care as part General Internal Medicine (GIM) medical cover and support GIM on-call. There may be opportunity to support time aligned to world class research or medical educational provision depending on the candidates interest and experience.

The recruitment of the post forms part of the wider Medicine Clinical Group strategy, which would seek to reduce the number of General Medical patients residing in non-medical wards and to centralise any surge in General Medical demand to a designated short stay medical ward.

Main duties of the job
Clinical duties and responsibilities include:
  • Providing, in collaboration with colleagues, a comprehensive General Internal Medicine service to patients in Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond, ensuring all appropriate waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to; that services are provided in an effective and efficient manner; and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are always maintained.
  • The appointee will be expected to work collaboratively with their colleagues to deliver the service in the Trust but also in the community setting.
  • Undertake unselected ward rounds of the inpatients on outlier wards.
  • Take responsibility for patients under their care.
  • Provide a consultation and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.
  • Participate in the development of the GIM medicine treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of conditions.
  • Participate in the General Medicine on-call rota and ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out-of-normal working hours.
  • Participate in the education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, nursing, and other personnel as appropriate. Interest and experience in undergraduate teaching is essential. This includes pre-clinical & clinical students from WMS.

Job responsibilities
As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all we have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies. Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others. Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a prerequisite for this post.

Education & Qualifications

Experience / Knowledge
  • Wide range of Clinical experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in General Medicine WITH SPECIALISM or equivalent

Management & Administrative
  • Ability to organize and manage flow within the ward. Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist services. Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainees and other doctors. Understanding of the concepts of management. Willingness to work collaboratively with the Trust's executive team.

Desirable
  • Proven experience of effective management of staff at a senior level. Potential to manage and lead a clinical team.

Teaching & Training
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology within 6 months of date of CCT (or Certification of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). Ability to design and deliver talks/lectures/workshops effectively. Demonstrate track record and interest in undergraduate training. Experience in demonstrating clinical procedures/techniques to other healthcare professionals. Commitment to continuing medical education.

Desirable
  • Higher qualification in medical education

Research, Audit & Clinical Governance
  • Undertaken complete audit cycle. Demonstrate evidence of recent research and development activity. Participated in completed clinical research projects. Published research in peer-reviewed journals. Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice.

Communication skills & abilities
  • Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice. Understanding of the clinical governance process. Ability to organise and manage waiting list priorities. Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service. Willingness to learn new skills as required by clinical need. Competent in basic information technology. Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainee and other doctors. Understanding of the concepts of management.

Desirable
  • Proven experience of effective management of staff at a senior level. Potential to manage and lead a clinical team. Further skills in information technology.
