Job summary
University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) invites applications for full-time, permanent Specialty Doctor posts in Emergency Medicine, working across Poole Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

The successful candidate will join the Tier 3/ ST3 equivalent rota within the Emergency Department.

The aim will be to develop and join the Tier 4/ST4 equivalent team after meeting certain competences.

This is a 10 PA post: 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA)

Candidates are required to have: 4 years postgraduate experience with 2 years of NHS ED experience to be eligible for this position

The Trust can provide a Certificate of Sponsorship for Tier 2 visa applicants, and overseas EM experience may be recognised when determining the starting point on the Specialty Doctor pay scale, which is as per the national terms and conditions.

UHD has a strong history of supporting doctors through CESR, with many progressing to substantive consultant roles.

Successful applicants may join a structured CESR programme, which includes tailored development plans in the emergency department, progression to rotations in key acute specialties (including Critical Care and Anaesthetics, Paediatrics and Acute medicine), and mentorship from CESR-qualified consultants to build their portfolio Participation is optional for candidates choosing to pursue training routes instead.

Main duties of the job

Following the merger of Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch Hospitals, UHD now operates Emergency Departments on both main sites and if successful applicants will be expected to work cross-site.

At present there is an Emergency Department at both Poole and Bournemouth sites, with RBH being the designated site for PCI and stroke thrombolysis, and Poole being the designated Major Trauma Unit as well as in patient paediatric services.

Job responsibilities
To provide high quality emergency care, being competent in the normal range of emergency medical conditions and injuries.

Direct clinical care will consist of scheduled shifts for the routine assessment and treatment of patients that present to the Emergency Department.

Take part in the middle tier rota, covering 24 hours, seven days a week.

Undertake professional development and participate in audit, ensuring all clinical governance areas are met.

Experience
Essential
  • At least 4 years of postgraduate training, including relevant posts in Emergency Medicine
  • A minimum of 2 years of recent experience working in an Emergency Department in the UK
  • Demonstrated successful completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent.
  • Involvement in audit and teaching activities.
  • Competence in independently managing minor injuries.
  • Able to independently manage a range of patients in Resus, majors and paediatric areas.
  • MRCEM primary

Desirable
  • ATLS, APLS, or ALS instructor status
  • Participation in research or simulation activities
  • Full MRCEM

Qualifications and Training
Essential
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice.
  • MBBS or an equivalent medical degree
  • Advanced life support (ALS) up to date

Desirable
  • Level 1 Ultrasound (USS) competency.
  • All 3 life support courses, up to date (ALS/ACLS, ATLS/ETC, APLS/EPLS).
