Job summary
The Neurology department at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) wishes to appoint a 6th substantive 1.0 WTE Consultant Neurologist with a sub-speciality interest in Neuromuscular disease (Muscle, Neuromuscular junction disorders).

The Neurology department based at the Royal Derby Hospital incorporates a busy General Neurology outpatient service, with sub specialism in Epilepsy, Headache, Movement Disorders including Huntington's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuro-degeneration (Cognitive Neurology, Motor Neurone Disease), Neuro-opthalmology and Botulinum Toxin therapy for Dystonia and Chronic Migraine as well as a Neurology in-patient service, which includes ward consults and a neurology ward supported by a Neuro-therapy team with Consultant weekend cover 9am-1pm.

Continuing Medical Education will be through attendance at the educational programme at Nottingham University Hospitals Neuroscience Centre.

Main duties of the job
The appointee will be responsible for:
  • Provision of the highest clinical standards in the management of Neurology patients.
  • To share with colleagues' responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Neurology Service
  • Teaching & Training of Neurology Specialist Nurses, Middle grade, Junior staff & Medical students
  • To actively participate in both departmental & Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance & audit
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in Continuing Medical Education (CME)
  • Completion of annual Job planning & Appraisal

Job description
Job responsibilities
Provision of a comprehensive Neurology service to the University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust in conjunction with your Consultant colleagues with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis & treatment of illness & the proper functioning of the department.

Responsibility for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan allowing for all proper delegation to & training of your staff.

Provision of cover for your Consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients and supervision of Neurology Specialty trainees, junior doctors & Specialist Nurses.

Responsibility for the professional supervision, training & management of the Neurology Specialty trainees & junior medical staff carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & continuing medical education activity locally & nationally as appropriate.

Participation in the clinical governance arrangements of the Trust & specifically within the Directorate including clinical audit & research.

Completion of annual Job planning & Appraisal

Responsibility for implementing the Infection Control Policies as determined by the University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

Responsibility for compliance with personal continuing medical education requirements with the support of the Trust.

Responsibility for maintaining awareness of professional guidelines such as Duties of a Doctor & of the GMC Performance Procedures & acting in accordance with them.

An exceptional requirement to undertake additional duties for limited periods within the geographical area specified above or to undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise
  • Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register OR Have CCT or be within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview and entry on GMC Specialist Register by date of commencement OR Evidence that the GMC is processing the Specialist Registration application (MUST be provided prior to interview)
  • MRCP or equivalent higher qualification

Desirable
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
  • Training Qualification

Experience
Essential
  • Wide experience in Neurology & a sub-specialty interest in Neuro-muscular disease (Muscle, Neuromuscular junction)
  • 6 months UK Healthcare setting experience at middle grade / senior level
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Neurology
  • Evidence of independent clinical practice

Desirable
  • Five years supervised training in an appropriate StR equivalent training programme
  • 1 year NHS experience

Management, Teaching, Audit and Research
Essential
  • Evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Experience of & commitment to teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates & postgraduates
  • Evidence of academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
  • Experience of and commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
  • Attended a management/leadership course

Desirable
  • Specific Teaching qualification

Language and Communication
Essential
  • Experience of formal presentations
  • Evidence of ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administrative duties
