Job Summary
The Consultant Neurologist post at James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a permanent 10 PA role within the Division of Medicine, Diagnostics and Clinical Support Services, with a core purpose of delivering and developing neurology services in conjunction with stroke medicine and acute frailty care. The role sits within a growing and collaborative multidisciplinary team, providing high-quality specialist care across a wide range of neurological conditions while contributing to service development, research, teaching, and innovation within a university hospital setting.

Main Duties of the Job
Main duties include delivering outpatient clinics, ward rounds, and inpatient consultations; providing expert advice to colleagues across specialties; participating in MDT meetings, education programmes, audit, and clinical governance activities; and taking an active role in the training and supervision of junior doctors. The post holder is also expected to support continuous service improvement, engage in professional development and research, and contribute to the strategic growth and sustainability of the neurology service.

Job Responsibilities
The Consultant Neurologist role at James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a substantive position centred on delivering high-quality, patient-focused neurological care while contributing to the ongoing development and sustainability of the Trusts neurology service. The post holder works as part of a multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive specialist input across both outpatient and inpatient settings, with a particular emphasis on integration with stroke medicine and acute frailty services. The role combines direct clinical care with broader responsibilities aligned to the Trusts ambitions as a university hospital, including teaching, research, service transformation, and clinical leadership.

In terms of clinical responsibilities, the Consultant Neurologist is expected to deliver a full range of neurology services, including outpatient clinics for new and follow-up patients, ward rounds, and the assessment and management of inpatient referrals. The post holder provides expert clinical advice to colleagues across a wide range of specialties, ensuring timely and appropriate management of patients with neurological conditions. Close collaboration with multidisciplinary colleaguesincluding specialist nurses, therapists, and other consultantsis a key component of the role, alongside active participation in regular clinical meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions to support coordinated, high-quality patient care.

A significant aspect of the role involves contributing to the strategic development of the neurology service. The appointee is expected to play an active part in shaping and improving service delivery, supporting innovation, and helping to meet increasing demand for neurological care within the local population. This includes engagement with clinical governance processes such as audit, quality improvement initiatives, and adherence to national and local standards, ensuring that services remain safe, effective, and responsive.

The post also carries important responsibilities in education and training. As part of a teaching hospital with strong links to academic partners, the Consultant Neurologist will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, act as an educational supervisor where appropriate, and support the development and appraisal of junior medical staff. Participation in continuing professional development, research activity, and the application of evidence-based practice is actively encouraged, reinforcing the Trusts commitment to innovation and academic excellence.

In addition, the role includes professional and organisational responsibilities such as compliance with Trust policies, participation in continuing medical education programmes, and effective use of designated professional time for activities including teaching, research, audit, and service development. The Consultant is expected to demonstrate leadership, support a positive and collaborative working culture, and contribute to maintaining high standards of communication, safety, and patient-centred care across the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent

Desirable
  • ALS
  • MD, PhD or equivalent

Experience & Knowledge
Essential
  • Wide experience in NEUROLOGY
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within COE and Stroke Medicine

Academic Achievements
Essential
  • Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
  • Knowledge of using evidence base medicine to support decision making
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit

Desirable
  • Involvement in research projects and published papers

Key Skills

  • Computer literate
  • Ability and enthusiasm for teaching health care professionals and medical students in a Neurology setting
