Job summaryPrimary purpose of the posts will be to support the perioperative education team in the delivery of our education strategy, which involves robust Foundation/induction programme, skills development, maintenance of standardised practice, BLS and manual handling requirements for 560+ perioperative practitioners in addition to the management of student cohorts, development of student timetables and provision of pastoral support.
The successful applicants will be required to become a an expert and source of advice for clinical teams in aspects of the perioperative service. The team will support perioperative team leaders with in delivery of speciality specific education, coordination of CME and in addition Support team leaders in the undertaking of moving and handling risk assessments, evaluating practice and developing training plans that are specific to the speciality needs.
The successful applicant will be support to undertake specialist training as required to undertake this role.
In addition, the successful applicant will be required to work 1 clinical day a week and work alongside the wider perioperative education team to deliver the education and training agenda.
We are recruiting for 1 x permanent and 1 x 18month secondment.

Main duties of the job- To support and deliver clinical education to staff working across all perioperative areas within University Hospitals Plymouth NHS trust. All educators will contribute to the overall strategy but in addition be required to support key agenda's such as manual handling, foundations programmes, student management, scrub practice etc.
- As perioperative clinical educator to take a lead role for moving and handling across Perioperative areas, providing expert/specialist advice on the implementation and maintenance of safe moving and handling policies and procedures.
- To coordinate all training relating to moving and handling including speciality areas such as proning, bariatric.
- To ensure Perioperative areas remain compliant with National Standards and regulations on moving and handling training and best practice.
- Provide information and professional advice to support the trust to meet national standards and legislative requirements and advise the Trust on compliance in relation to Perioperative moving and handling practices and standards.
- To take a lead role on the developments, implementation and audit of Safer moving and handling policy for Perioperative areas

Job responsibilitiesEducation and Training service delivery- Develop and deliver training programmes and work with stakeholders to evaluate and continuously improve all training programmes offered by the organisational development function.
- Evaluate and assess participants in programmes to ensure key learning outcomes and competencies are achieved to ensure the quality of patient care.

- Support and collaborate with clinical colleagues, theatre team leaders and other stakeholders in the development of staff, offering guidance and advice as appropriate.
- Support the delivery of other trust education and training initiatives as required, including the assessment of competence and developmental interventions.
- Develop and support the delivery of corporate mandatory training including manual handling, medical device training, end of life and mental capacity training. Ensuring a standardised approach across all theatres to management and documentation/recordkeeping.
- To work with Service Lines to manage a structured, competency-based induction and training programme for new and existing staff to the clinical area, ensuring a system of preceptorship and mentorship are fully utilised.
Manual Handling Specific duties:- To conduct moving and handling assessments and develop competencies of moving and handling in conjunction with perioperative key workers.
- To monitor the effectiveness of the moving and handling practices across perioperative areas.
- Facilitate clinical teams in the management of bariatric patients in the perioperative environment.
- Advise on the purchase of specialist equipment, facilitate individual care plans (working with tissue viability, infection control and clinical engineering teams to develop appropriate care pathways for bariatric patients in the perioperative environment.
- Represent Perioperative service in organisational, regional, and national networks for Moving and handling in perioperative practice, Health and Safety related manual handling and national standards re: Back exchange.
- Ensure standards of record keeping within Perioperative Services meet the required standards to mitigate moving and handling risks, working with Health and Safety, legal department, and Governance teams.
Design/management and leadership of education and training.To manage development, training, and assessment programmes for registered and non-registered staff across all theatres/recovery/pre-op and admissions within University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust.
- To plan, deliver and evaluate the moving and handling training programmes for perioperative areas as part of the statutory and essential update training programme and/or induction. To ensure national and local standards are implemented and met.
- To lead design and delivery of key worker course for moving and handling in perioperative areas.
- To support development of locality trainers/key workers who will support delivery of moving and handling training and competency assessment within local teams.
- Support senior management with the development and design of training and assessment to address workforce challenges, change and future service requirements.
- To regularly evaluate the perioperative moving and handling training plan and mechanisms for deliver.Promote the development of opportunities for shared learning to support across multi-professional, service, and organisational boundaries.

- To provide expert/specialist advice and guidance on the implementation of a safe moving and handling policy, identify shortfalls in compliance and develop action plans with managers to provide assurance to the organisation.
- To formulate and review policies and procedures in relation to moving and handling in perioperative areas and the reduction of Musculo-skeletal problems experienced by employees.
- To monitor Health and safety in relation to moving and handling by participating in audit programmes on the review of perioperative risk assessments, patient documentation, postural observation and equipment inventories.
- To provide specialist advice to clinical teams on specific care required to safely move patients with complex moving and handling needs within clinical settings. Ensuring safe care plans are in place in this situation.
