Job summary
This is a fixed term post for 12 months in the first instance, extendable by mutual consent, for those interested in developing a career in medical simulation and education.

This exciting and predominantly educational role carries responsibility for coordination and provision of teaching and simulation, including clinical skills, for post-graduate/IMT doctors, student physician associates and year 5 Imperial medical students.

The trainee will work to develop and deliver staff training and medical simulation projects. Approximately 1 day per week can incorporate a clinical service commitment in the adult intensive care unit.

Main duties of the job
The trainee will be expected to complete a postgraduate qualification in medical education. This will be fully funded as part of the post and is normally in the form of a postgraduate certificate (PGcert).

However, the successful applicant could undertake a diploma should a PGcert have already been achieved.

The aim of the position is to enable the Fellow, by the end of twelve months:
  • To function independently as a medical simulation facilitator and educator.
  • To have completed a Postgraduate Certificate or equivalent in medical education/simulation. This will be fully funded as part of the role.
  • To have developed an understanding of how simulation training can be used to reduce clinical risk.
  • To have gained further clinical experience in Intensive Care Medicine relevant to higher medical training

The CSSC at Royal Brompton hospital is a safe learning environment for learners from across clinical disciplines with an interest in cardiothoracic medicine and surgery.

The well-equipped centre incorporates four teaching rooms, a simulation lab and skills lab, with teaching resources which include the Apollo high fidelity patient simulator, bronchoscopy, ultrasound and surgical simulators. Additionally, the centre offers a variety of part task training models. Support is offered to learners and faculty by the centre staff which include an simulation facilitator of nursing background and a technician.

Job responsibilities
The fellow will work with 5th year Imperial medical students in intensive care medicine and will have the opportunity to be involved in bedside teaching, simulated training, small group teaching and other teaching format. The nature of the placements at Royal Brompton means the fellow will be able to capitalise on small group numbers to deliver learner-focused sessions, and the fellow will have the opportunity to shape the students learning experience.

In addition, the fellow will also work with the clinical skills and simulation coordinator, Royal Marsden simulation fellow and Harefield Hospital education fellow to provide simulation for IMT trainees. They will be supported to organise and co-facilitate a series of immersive simulation and simulated skills training days for IMT doctors from Royal Brompton, Marsden and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

There will be additional opportunity to support in facilitating established consultant led simulated training programmes across specialties including respiratory, cardiology, anaesthetics and Imperial College school of Medicine.

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Completion of Foundation Year 2 Training (or equivalent)

  • MRCP/FRCA/MRCEM/MRCS (or first part) or equivalent
