Job summary
An exciting role has become available within Urology for a Band 7, ward manager. The role is for a 9 month secondment to cover maternity leave.

The successful applicant will manage the unit which comprises of two areas, the UIU (Urology Investigation Unit) and USDEC (Urology same day emergency care unit). The Urology investigation Unit (UIU) is a Urology diagnostic unit based within the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. The unit cares for Urology patients who are undergoing investigations into both benign and malignant conditions. The nursing team works closely with both the Urology clinicians and the Urology Nurse Specialists to provide the best support and care possible.

The USDEC area sees and assesses patient who need same day emergency care or treatment. These patients arrive via a number of routes, including A+E, single point of access, direct referral from consultants and CNSs and via ward referral for follow up treatment following discharge. Patients are treated and either discharged with a plan of care or admitted to our Urology ward.

This band 7 post is pivotal in providing the overall management of both the UIU and USDEC. The successful applicant will need to guide and support the team in continuing to develop the unit and its staff going forward.

Main duties of the job
  • Provides care utilising clinical experience and knowledge for patients and carers, and assists the multidisciplinary team
  • On-going assessment and evaluation of the patient and their individual needs.
  • Establish professional therapeutic relationships with the patient and acts as the patients advocate within the MDT setting.
  • Develops nurse led care, where appropriate, in line with national guidelines.
  • Educates patients in the understanding of their illness, treatments and provides other sources of information, help and support
  • Maintains a programme of personal and professional development in light of evolving service changes by attending in-service training and utilising educational opportunities.
  • Participates in opportunities to share good practice and innovations with colleagues
  • Is alert to his/her own psychological health needs with reference to working within surgical services and the needs of others and is able to receive and offer support where appropriate.
  • Maintains high professional standards of care and professional expertise, keeping up to date with professional issues and ensuring they are reflected in practice.
  • Using appropriate databases, keeps accurate records, submits statistical returns and compiles reports as required
  • Supports flow from A+E by identifying potential patients to be streamed to USDEC following discussion with Urology team.

Job responsibilities
Key Duties:
Professional / Clinical Leadership:

  • To assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care, co-ordinating the holistic needs of the patients. To be responsible for the organisation of nursing care of the patients who have been assigned to the team.
  • To take measures to ensure the safety of patients, which includes delegation of patient care to nurses with the appropriate levels of skills at all times. To report any untoward incidents/accidents to Matron/Directorate Manager.
  • Establish and maintain communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters, overcoming any problems in communication.
  • Lead work teams in the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice.

Clinical Governance:
  • Promote best practice in health, safety and security.
  • Contribute to quality improvement.
  • To facilitate research based practice within their Ward and ensure appropriate implementation.
  • To ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the Policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • To ensure good standards of practice in the Ward through effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes.
  • To ensure all staff is conversant and comply with Trust Policies and regulations, and attend compulsory lectures as instructed.
  • To monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies, ordering replacement equipment together with maintenance of that equipment.

Management:
  • To ensure that a duty rota for the staff within the Ward will provide effective and well-balanced cover to meet with the requirements of a 24 hour service and ensures the presence of a suitably qualified and experienced nurse at all times. Taking into account the budgetary constraints.
  • To liaise with other Ward/Department Managers within the Directorate and other Directorates as necessary, to place workload and skill mix as effectively as possible. To inform and discuss with Matron/Directorate Manager any problems regarding nurse management.
  • Allocate, co-ordinate, monitor and assess the work of teams and individuals.
  • To manage the Ward/Unit allocated budget effectively to remain within financial constraints.
  • To ensure effective two-way communication with all disciplines so that patients receive optimum care.
  • Plan, obtain and deploy physical and/or financial resources.
  • To provide information for and participate in studies to determine workloads, patient dependency and quality assurance.
  • To maintain accurate records relating to all aspects of Ward management.
  • To participate in a rota of cover in the absence of Matron/Directorate Manager.
  • Contribute to the development of services.

Staff Development:
  • To ensure all staff reach their full potential by enabling them to develop professional, clinical, managerial and communication skills, which will be identified through the use of IPR.
  • To plan and participate in the teaching programmes of learners in accordance with their objectives, working closely with the University.
  • To develop the role of nursing within their specialty Ward and undertake training and assessment to extend clinical skills as appropriate to the Ward.
  • To identify areas for development of skills in accordance with the NMC guidelines.
  • Develop knowledge and practice in an area of work.

Professional:
  • To maintain a professional attitude at all times, developing the role of the nurse in the best interest of the patient and professional in accordance with the NMC Code.
