Job Summary
Wye Valley NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Locum Consultant General Surgeon who will provide a Consultant Surgeon service for the management of General Surgical diseases including laparoscopic cholecystectomies and hernias, as required for outpatient, inpatient and day-cases. This post is based at the County Hospital, Hereford.

This is a 6-month Locum full time post attracting 10 PAs.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Provide a Consultant Surgeon service for the management of general surgical diseases, including laparoscopic cholecystectomies and hernias, as required for outpatient, inpatient and day-cases at the WVT.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary audit meetings.
  • Be actively involved in postgraduate training / teaching especially for the SpRs in the department.
  • Participate in departmental audit and clinical governance activity.
  • Work with the management team to meet the organisation's waiting time targets for all patients.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Full doctors GMC Registration with Licence To Practice
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent
  • FRCS or qualification of an equivalent level

Desirable
  • Higher research degree
  • Entry on Specialist Register in General Surgery, Or within six months of obtaining Specialist Registration (at the date of interview), or possession of CESR

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Broad training/experience in all aspects of General Surgery
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Desirable
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCST in General Surgery

Management and Administrative Experience
Essential
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities
  • Ability to manage and lead the General Surgery firm and multi-disciplinary team

Desirable
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision making

Teaching Experience
Essential
  • Experience of and a commitment to training/ teaching undergraduate and postgraduates.
  • Appraisal and assessment skills.
  • Ability to assess clinical competencies
  • Enthusiastic and ability to inspire and lead others.

Desirable
  • Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching.
  • Post Graduate qualification in teaching and training.

Research Experience
Essential
  • Understanding and interest in research.
  • Ability to appraise research critically
  • Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research projects.
  • Evidence of recent research and development activity
  • Evidence of audit cycle completion

Desirable
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research e.g. research based publication
