Job summaryBirmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust are currently recruiting for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Hand and Upper Limb Surgery available to commence in October 2026.
This is a senior fellowship post equivalent to post CCT level
The Hand and Upper Limb team provides secondary care for the population of southern and central Birmingham, tertiary care for the West Midlands and beyond. There is a close working relationship within the plastic surgical team and a very supportive and educational environment.
Main duties of the jobThis post will include daily ward rounds and trauma list commitments as well as elective clinics and operating including MDT clinics. The successful candidate will be attached to the Hand and Upper Limb Service and participate in all activities. The post can include a 1 in 8-9 commitment within the on-call rota. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in audit/research.
This is a senior fellow post with responsibilities, training and experience equivalent to an end of training or post FRCS post. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate successful completion of a Plastic Training Programme or equivalent, with adequate experience in hand surgery.

Person Specification- Qualifications & Clinical Experience (Essential):
- Medical Degree from a recognised University
- A minimum of 6 years full time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part time basis) or equivalent experience and competencies.
- Evidence of progress in Plastic Surgery Training or equivalent Programme to successful completion of the programme or having passed exit examination in Plastic Surgery at the time of taking up the post, or equivalent
- Previous experience in Hand Surgery
- Qualifications & Clinical Experience (Desirable):
- Other Educational Qualification
- (ALS/APLS/ATLS)
- enrolment on to a hand diploma
- Eligibility (Essential):
- Full GMC registration
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
- Eligibility to live and work in the UK
- Skills (Essential):
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are competent to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues
- Understands the importance of communication within a clinical setting
- Capacity to operate effectively under pressure and remain objective in highly emotive or pressurised situations. Awareness of own limitations and when to ask for help
- Skills (Desirable):
- Knowledge of wider health debate and NHS Structures, and current media issues.
- Ability to acknowledge that behaviour needs to modify to the situation and audience
