Job summary
We are looking for a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join our team of Consultants in Women's Health at Southmead Hospital, Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. Due to recent national appointments, we have created a need for someone to join our growing team and to support our core business.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team when we are developing and expanding services offering high quality care to our women in all parts of our service.

An interest in colposcopy would be especially welcome.

Main duties of the job
Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC's specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.

The postholder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the post holder is absent. The postholder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. The postholder will be required to take part in a Clinical Audit Programme.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
  • CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of commencing the post.
  • Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC's specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.

Desirable
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MS).

Training And Experience
Essential
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Clinical training and experience in general Obstetrics & Gynaecology equivalent to that required for UK CCT.
  • Any ATSM / SITM complementing advanced and benign gynaecology.
  • Colposcopy training.

Desirable
  • Advanced laparoscopic, hysteroscopy and gynaecological scanning.
  • Evidence of MDT working in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Other
Essential
  • Must reside within 30 minutes or ten miles from the principal place of work

Clinical Knowledge, Skills & Audit
Essential
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in audit project and written up
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Knowledge of political context within which we operate.

Desirable
  • Completion of a general management course or programme.
  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.
  • Demonstration of quality improvement projects successfully completed.

Research
Essential
  • Proven teaching ability.
  • Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates.

Desirable
  • Proven track record in research.
  • Willingness to undertake further research.
  • Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.
  • Ability to teach effectively
  • Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.

Teaching and Training
Essential
  • Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff.

Interpersonal, communication and team working skills
Essential
  • s empathetic and sensitive to the needs of others including patients and colleagues.
  • An ability to explain complex and sensitive information, sometimes under stressful circumstances to others.
  • Must be able to influence and persuade effectively.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to write and present management reports as required.

Desirable
  • Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.
