Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Dietitian to join our well established and friendly Nutrition and Dietetics team at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. This permanent Band 6 post is full time (37.5 hours per week) specialising in type 1 diabetes outpatients, DAFNE (potential opportunity for training/development) and the REACT team, providing dietetic input to a multidisciplinary therapy team to ensure vulnerable patients' nutritional and hydration needs are met particularly in urgent and emergency care. The post holder will also provide the clinical support and development of a Band 5 Dietitian, as well as supporting B and C student placements. The Nutrition and Dietetic Department consists of over 40 members of staff, providing integrated acute and community nutrition and dietetic services across Buckinghamshire. We actively encourage CPD and clinical supervision for the professional development of the team. The department has good secretarial / IT support and takes students for B and C placements. Accommodation on site may be available.

Main duties of the job
  • To be an autonomous practitioner and act as a source of clinical expertise in the areas of type 1 diabetes in the out-patient setting and nutrition support across acute and community services (supporting timely discharge/front door care).
  • To work autonomously, developing dietetic input to a multidisciplinary therapyTeam (REACT) to ensure vulnerable patients nutritional and hydration needs are met particularly in urgent and emergency care.
  • To provide specialised assessment, treatment and support of patients requiring dietetic treatment in diabetes services.
  • To provide support for dietitians, dietetic assistants, student dietitians and members of the wider MDT.
  • To develop and maintain a high standard of knowledge and practical experience in dietetics and nutritional support.
  • To work autonomously to assess and advise on nutritional diagnosis (interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometry, clinical condition and diet history) and the development of suitable Dietetics care plans, feeding plans/regimens (including the calculation of nutritional requirements and client centred goals)
  • To develop and deliver the dietetic service within urgent and emergency care (accident and emergency, short stay ward) to ensure patients receive dietetic support in a timely manner, in order to influence nutritional status as early as possible.

Person Specification
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential
  • An appropriate degree recognised for registration with HCPC
  • Registered with HCPC
  • Post graduate/CPD training evidence of study in relevant specialist field specialist training
  • Documentary evidence of Continued Professional Development

Desirable
  • British Dietetic Association Member
  • Membership of Specialist Group of the BDA / PENG

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
Essential
  • Ability to relate and communicate clearly at all levels with patients, colleagues and members of the MDT (verbal / written)
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Supervision of individual staff members
  • Ability to work flexibly and be adaptable to meet the changing requirements and needs of the service
  • Ability to reflect and appraise own performance
  • Ability to state the case for nutritional intervention as part of the care plan
  • Able to deal with distressed, difficult or abusive patients or carers
  • Able to respond to unpredictable work-patterns and interruptions
  • Ability to manage and prioritise clinical caseload
  • Ability to document and record accurate records in line with national standards
  • Ability to record activity and other data manually and electronically
  • To complete allocated projects and meet deadlines
  • Experience of engaging in project / guideline /QI /service development
  • Competent user of IT equipment and basic software [email, word processing, data inputting, dietary assessment]
  • PROFESSIONAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to assist in developing educational resources to meet the needs of patients and carers which are evidence-based
  • Awareness of clinical governance and its implications for dietetics including importance of audit projects
  • Awareness of regulatory bodies (HCPC) and professional bodies (BDA) and code of practice and professional guidelines Commitment to engage in CPD, appraisal process and clinical supervision
  • Skills to train other health care professionals and student dietitians
  • Clear and concise verbal communication
  • Able to organise own caseload
  • High emphasis on patient care
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to develop professionally
  • Practices evidence-based dietetics; can research and appraise evidence; can devise practical action from evidence
