Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced (Band 7) Emergency Injuries Practitioner, to work within the Homerton Healthcare Emergency Department Injuries Unit, providing autonomous assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting with minor injuries, musculoskeletal presentations and urgent care needs.

The role involves independently undertaking comprehensive clinical examinations, requesting and interpreting investigations, delivering evidence-based treatments, performing minor injury procedures, and ensuring safe discharge or referral to specialist services.

The Injuries practitioner will need to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, to provide high-quality, patient-centred care while supporting health promotion, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to service improvement within the Emergency Department.

Main duties of the job
  • To be able to assess, examine, diagnose and manage patients presenting with minor injuries and urgent care conditions autonomously.
  • To take comprehensive patient histories and perform advanced physical examinations.
  • To be able to request, interpret and act upon diagnostic investigations, including X-rays and blood tests.
  • To be able to develop and implement evidence-based treatment and management plans.
  • To perform clinical procedures such as wound closure, suturing, plastering, wound care and removal of foreign bodies.
  • To safely discharge patients or refer them to appropriate specialist services when required.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
  • Provide health promotion, patient education and advice on ongoing care.
  • Support, supervise and mentor junior staff, students and trainee practitioners.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, service development, audits, research and the implementation of local policies and guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective and patient-centred care.

Qualifications
Essential
  • RN / HCPC.
  • Educated to Masters level or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced Assessment Skills Course.
  • Minor Injuries Course.

Desirable
  • Non medical prescribing.
  • Minor illness course.

Skills/ Abilities
Essential
  • Expert clinical practice in minor injuries.
  • Evidence of strong organisational and leadership skills.
  • Teaching skills in informal and formal situations.
  • Able to facilitate training for all levels of staff.
  • Able to identify training needs of individuals.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Computer skills.

Experience
Essential
  • Experience at Band 6/7 ENP/ANP/ECP within an A&E.

Desirable
  • Experience in an urgent care environment.

Knowledge
Essential
  • Expert clinical knowledge of minor injuries.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of current developments in Emergency care, the Trust and the National Health Service and able to translate and implement into quality A&E practice.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of NMC Code.
  • Knowledge//understanding of confidentiality issues.
