Job summaryThis post is to join our Trauma department for a fixed term 12 month contract with opportunity to extend only for 1 Year, subject to agreement from both parties.
The SCF will be responsible for the day to day management of patients on the Trauma ward, maintain regular contact with the on call General Surgery consultant (and other speciality consultants where required), liaises closely with them about the management plan for each patient.
Main duties of the jobThe SCF will be expected to cooperate with, instruct, teach and supervise other doctors of the Firm at SpR, JCF, SHO, F1/F2 level in their clinical work and audit activity of the unit. The Department is proactively involved with student teaching and regular student teaching is mandatory for the SCF.
The post-holder is expected to bring along a genuine interest in Major Trauma Surgery, its clinical practice, the diagnosis and therapy of rare and complex disease, and surgical practice.

Specific clinical objectives- To be resident on-site and share in the immediate (<5min of arrival) triage and assessment of critical major trauma patients and to undertake immediate lifesaving surgery
- To be integral part of the resuscitation team
- To assist the Consultant (General) Trauma Surgeon or any other sub speciality surgeon in the process of decision making, transfer to theatres, and phase I emergency surgery
- To attend the daily general surgical hand-over meeting from 7:30 to 8:00 am in order to be informed of any overnight problems with Major trauma/ Emergency Surgery patients
- To participate in daily ITU/HDU and trauma ward rounds as key surgical communicator
- To participate in the daily morning trauma meeting and to put into action any surgical plans resulting hereof
- To provide surgical continuity of care for all major trauma patients including performance/assistance in delayed emergency procedures

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- MRCP or equivalent.
- Registerable medical qualification.
DesirableRegistrationEssential- Full registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice.
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential- Experience in day to day organisation of [General surgery] services in a busy Teaching Hospital
Desirable- Specialist Trauma/ Emergency Surgical Experience
Research and auditEssential- Understanding of principles of medical audit
Desirable- Undertaken audit projects
- Involvement in research project(s)
TeachingEssential- Willing to teach and instruct on all levels
Desirable- Experience of undergraduate teaching
Skills and CompetenciesEssential- Desire to continue personal development
- Effective communicator, able to work in a close-kit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff
