Job summaryApplicants are invited to apply for the post of Specialty Doctor in Urology at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible to and work under the supervision of Consultant Urologists. Within the hours contracted, the successful candidate is expected to be flexible in the exact hours worked each day.
The Urology department is seeking enthusiastic, highly motivated and dedicated people with the ability to work with the general surgery team to provide a comprehensive service across the department.
The successful candidate will be trained to perform core and specialist urological procedures, and your duties will ensure that you continue to gain appropriate clinical Urology experience including support in taking professional exams. We have a strong track record of supporting our colleagues to entry to the specialist register in Urology (CCT/CESR/Portfolio Pathway).
All Medical staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with hospital health and safety policies, clinical governance and other risk management policies.
Main duties of the jobThis post will take part in outpatient clinics and routine inpatient care as directed. They will also be responsible for helping run the haematuria clinic, prostate assessment clinics (LATP) and SDEC clinics. Assistance in operating theatres (both inpatient and outpatient) will be programmed into your timetable.
They will undertake a 1:7 on call rota including non-resident out of hours as part of a middle grade urology rota.
The chosen candidate will provide clinical support and set a professional example working alongside other clinical staff. More specifications about main duties will be in shift details received from trust.

Job responsibilities- To support the Foundation Year 1 Doctors, and CT/Junior Fellows.
- To be able to manage the acutely ill patient.
- To be able to receive ED & GP referrals and liaise with senior doctors regarding management of acutely ill patients.
- To develop skills as a urological trainee in theatre and out-patients using the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Project as a framework.
- To develop in communication skills with colleagues, staff and patients as well as documentation.
- To be able to work as a member of a team and with other teams in a multi-disciplinary setting.
- To be able to show professionalism during the delivery of the role that will support and enable good clinical care.
- To develop competency in the area of decision making and prioritising ones workload as well as demonstrating effective time management.
- To be trained in, where possible, and contribute to flexible cystoscopy and prostate biopsy investigations, emergency surgery and managing admissions to urology.
- To participate in an on-call rota.
Person SpecificationQualifications/ RegistrationEssential- Medical degree & MRCS or equivalent
- Applicants must hold full GMC registration with a license to practise.
DesirableExperience/ TrainingEssential- Experience at Registrar level in Urology Surgery
- The ability to do flexible cystoscopy and prostate biopsies (LATP)
Desirable- Ability to run outpatient clinics without supervision
KnowledgeEssential- Appropriate level of clinical knowledge
- Knowledge and application of up to date evidence based practice.
- IT and Computer Skills
Clinical SkillsEssential- Experience in the management of patients with Urological problems.
- Understanding of clinical risk management
- Validated logbook with summary documentation of surgical exposure
- Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need.
- Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement.
Communication Skills and TeachingEssential- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
- Capacity to work effectively in a multi -disciplinary team
Other requirementsEssential- Ability to work independently as well as part of the Urology team
- Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.
- Evidence of active participation in audit.
Desirable- Ability and desire to take part in Clinical Directorate management.
