Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist who has experience working in immunology. This role is based at the NNUH hub site. The service is a core hour service where flexible working arrangements can be offered. It is expected that applicants will have completed their specialist portfolio in Immunology or Clinical Chemistry. The successful candidate will work closely with the senior Immunology BMS staff to undertake specialist Immunology testing and reporting. Consideration will be given to applicants who have started their portfolio with the expectation this will be completed within 2 yrs of being in post. Please note this is a 3 year post. The Laboratory at NNUH provides a large range of Blood Sciences services comprising Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion, Immunology and Toxicology.

Main duties of the job
The Eastern Pathology Alliance is formed from three Pathology Laboratories based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), the James Paget University Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn. The Laboratory at NNUH provides a large range of Blood Sciences services comprising Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion, Immunology and Toxicology. The Department covers a range of specialist assays including protein electrophoresis, autoimmunity and allergy testing on multiple platforms include capillary electrophoresis, gel immunofixation, immunofluorescence slide staining and immunoassay platforms.

Job responsibilities

• Communicates complex clinical scientific service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers
• Answers telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provide information that is highly complex about methodologies and service requirements
• Interprets results and reassures the users that the information is correct when results do not agree with clinical presentation and investigate and problem solves situations in their specialist field
• Manages own work and day-to-day routine work in specialised services. Responsible for processing both urgent and routine work to maintain routine turnaround times in line with Trust and Service polices
• Maintains very complex specialist analytical equipment on a daily basis and sign off as fit for clinical use
• Responsible for the efficient use of expensive tests and high value analysers
• Run test procedures on all methodologies on a daily basis to include calibration and quality control testing and sign off methods as fit for clinical use
• Fault find equipment and analyser function after formal in-house training
• Implement policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust.

Qualifications and experience
Essential

• HCPC registered
• BSc Hons or equivalent
• Specialised Diploma from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) or equivalent
• Experience working in Immunology
