Job summary
Working with a vision of delivering excellence across Medicine Division, the post holder will provide dedicated clinical education support to Neurology. The Clinical Educator will be an enthusiastic and proactive role model, supporting staff to deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care across the neurology service. The successful candidate will be an experienced practitioner with strong clinical knowledge relevant to neurology and a passion for staff development, patient safety, and high-quality care. They will work alongside nurses and wider multidisciplinary teams to strengthen induction, enhance clinical competence, and promote consistent standards of practice. The role includes developing and delivering targeted education, supporting competency assessment, identifying areas for improvement, and fostering a positive learning culture that enables staff to thrive and services to maintain high performance and excellent patient experience.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will support the development of staff across the Neurology service. They will coordinate the orientation of new starters, ensuring timely induction and safe transition into clinical practice. The role includes delivering targeted education, supporting competency assessment, promoting reflective practice, clinical supervision, and a positive learning culture. The post holder will act as a visible role model, ensuring that patient dignity, safety, and high standards of care are consistently upheld. They will contribute to maintaining staff competence in the use of clinical equipment, support mandatory training compliance, and assist with training needs analysis. The educator will work closely with line managers and senior staff to plan and monitor education activity, maintain accurate training records, and escalate concerns where required. They will also support the development and delivery of service-specific training programmes, facilitate experiential learning opportunities, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives across the neurology pathway.

Job responsibilities
  • To ensure the delivery of care is in accordance with the policies, procedures, guidelines and practices of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
  • To liaise with appropriate line manager / senior staff to ensure individuals personal and development needs are used to inform planning of education and training.
  • To ensure line managers and senior staff are kept informed of progress.
  • To assist with annual training needs analysis.
  • To ensure that continuing professional development is provided for all staff, including students and elective placements, so that the required level of knowledge and competence is maintained / achieved.
  • In conjunction with other educator and Line managers ensure mandatory training database is accurate and maintained, escalating in a timely manner any concerns or issues.
  • To assist in the development of a planned programme of attendance of mandatory training, team days and the development study days.
  • To assist staff to complete Competency packages and ensure up to date records are maintained in staff files and on training database.
  • To assist Educational Lead with Educational Audits as required.
  • To organise Educational Programmes to provide the opportunity for staff to develop their skills in A-E assessment and essential skills etc.
  • To contribute to the monitoring and control of expenditure and the use of resources.

Person Specification
Training & Qualifications
Essential
  • Current level one NMC registration
  • Have a suitable Teaching & Assessing Qualification Possession of a Mentoring Course or equivalent
  • Training/education/teaching experience

Desirable
  • Continuing professional development/ reflective profile
  • Degree in health / nursing related Studies
  • Venupuncture trained
  • Cannulation trained
  • ECG Trained
  • Resus trained
  • Manual handling trained

Experience
Essential
  • Supervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration and supervision of new staff
  • Evidence of ability to mentor
  • Ability to lead change and lead new ways of working
  • Working knowledge of relevant healthcare standards and best practices, including WINW and competency documents
  • Must have Neurology Experience

Desirable
  • Audit or research within the clinical area
  • Formal teaching of groups of staff
  • Previous experience of competency-based training, planning and delivery
