Job summary
A 12-month secondment opportunity is available for an experienced Registered Nurse to help expand the inpatient oxygen service at NUH. We are offering this position as a Band 6 Specialist Nurse role, 18.75 hours per week pro rota, flexible to the service demand. This role is designed for nurses with relevant experience in respiratory, oncology, palliative, or cardiology medicine. It is ideal for individuals who are passionate about long-term condition management and eager to gain experience in service design, leadership, and respiratory medicine. The inpatient oxygen service at NUH was set up in 2023 and continues to expand to improve patient pathways. The post holder will report to the Lead Specialist Nurse and will work autonomously while building close partnerships with community specialist teams, BOC, and NUH specialist nursing teams.

The service operates Monday- Friday from 08:00- 16:00.

We are looking for a confident leader experienced in complex case management. In this role, you will use critical thinking to guide patients through their oxygen therapy journey, acting as a vital link between primary and secondary care. You will deliver safe, high-quality treatment and coordinate necessary referrals to significantly improve our patients' quality of life.

Main duties of the job

• Specialist Clinical Practice: Assess and manage inpatients requiring complex oxygen therapy, drawing from your background in respiratory, oncology, palliative, or cardiac care.
• Cross-Specialty Collaboration: Integrate the inpatient oxygen service with NUH wards and outpatient clinics to deliver holistic patient care and structured discharge pathways.
• Service Expansion: Collaborate directly with the Lead Nurse to embed new trust-wide inpatient oxygen pathways.
• Leadership & Education: Deliver vital clinical guidance and education to ward-based teams on safe oxygen titration, blood gas interpretation and home oxygen assessments.

Job responsibilities
Patient Care and Oxygen Management

• Assess inpatients for Long Term Oxygen Therapy (LTOT), Ambulatory Oxygen (AOT), and Palliative Oxygen prior to discharge from hospital.
• Provide specialist advice and treatment for respiratory and non-respiratory conditions around home oxygen management, equipment and risk mitigation.
• Perform home oxygen assessments, including accurately identifying patients complex equipment needs for inpatients leaving the hospital.
• Provide respiratory specialist knowledge and optimise known chronic lung conditions.
• Provide emotional support to patients and families.
• Provide smoking cessation advice and referral to the smoking cessation services.
• Provide telephone advice to patients and carers following discharge from hospital.

Diagnostics and Safety

• Interpret blood gases.
• Ability to complete Capillary Blood Gases.
• Ability to complete carbon monoxide testing and interpretation.
• Complete training and competencies for safe oxygen assessments.
• Complete home oxygen risk assessments and create individualised risk mitigation plans for patients requiring home oxygen.
• Join home oxygen network meetings and share updates with teams.
• Highlight patients that require a senior review.
• Streamline referrals to ensure patients are reviewed in a timely manner.

Teamwork and Education

• Provide specialist expert advice to NUH colleagues around home oxygen assessments and safely discharging patients with home oxygen.
• Work collaboratively with community teams to manage and support patients on home oxygen.
• Contribute to updating guidelines and SOPS.
• Educate NUH staff members on oxygen therapy.
• Educate patients and carers on how to manage oxygen therapy following discharge from hospital.
• Liaise with MDT members
• Attend oxygen network meetings, feedback as required.
• Referral to community teams to ensure appropriate follow-up after hospital discharge.
• Liaise with other NUH specialist teams to ensure appropriate specialist reviews have been completed.

Training and Qualification
Essential

• NMC registration
• Degree in nursing or health related studies

Desirable

• Post-graduate studies at level 7 (masters level) or currently undertaking

Experience
Essential

• 3 years post registration experience in either Respiratory, Oncology, Palliative or Cardiac care
• Experience in managing long term conditions
• Understand the clinical significance of blood gas monitoring for home oxygen assessments

Desirable

• Experience in home oxygen assessments.
• Experience in ordering home oxygen.
