Job summary
The role requires a highly skilled Nurse who will be able to clinically lead the Hospital Liaison Team across a 24/7 rota to support the Team to provide a response to mental health crisis in Emergency Departments and Inpatient Wards within one hour and to all urgent Ward referrals within 24 hours.

The post holder will need to provide specialist clinical advice, support and supervision to staff at Scunthorpe General Hospital and to junior staff within the Hospital Liaison Team.

The service needs to be constantly adapting and developing to meet the changing provision at Scunthorpe General Hospital. The appointee will need to be actively involved in change processes and support junior staff through this process.

The service will operate over a 24/7 rota. This may include night and weekend working from our base at Scunthorpe General Hospital. The role will often require you to operate under the Lone Working Policy.

The service provides Liaison Services for people aged 18 years and above and 16-18 years out of hours.

Main duties of the job
  • Undertake comprehensive mental health, psychosocial and risk assessments for patients presenting to the Emergency Department and inpatient wards with complex mental health needs.
  • Provide timely specialist mental health interventions, treatment planning and risk management, including assessment of patients presenting with suicidal thoughts or behaviours.
  • Support delivery of national response standards and crisis care pathways, ensuring prompt assessment and appropriate follow-up care.
  • Provide clinical leadership, specialist advice and support to Liaison Mental Health Team staff, acute hospital colleagues and partner agencies.
  • Coordinate care, discharge planning and onward referrals, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, patients, families and carers.
  • Manage a complex caseload and contribute to the allocation and prioritisation of referrals to ensure safe and effective service delivery.
  • Promote high standards of clinical practice, governance, safeguarding and compliance with relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement, audit, training and education programmes for both mental health and acute hospital staff.
  • Support staff development through supervision, mentorship, coaching and clinical training.
  • Deputise for the Team Leader when required, contributing to the day-to-day operational management of the service.

Person Specification

Qualifications
Essential
  • Evidence of other development and/or training which indicates commitment to continuous development and preparation for leadership
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse
  • ENB 998 or other NMC approved mentor qualification or mentor qualification appropriate to discipline
  • Nurse Prescribing or willingness to complete within an agreed timescale
  • Specialist training in relevant clinical area

Desirable
  • Management or leadership qualification and/or training

Experience
Essential
  • Demonstrable post registration experience at a Band 6 level within an assessment or liaison service
  • In depth experience in the effective and positive management of complex and high risk cases
  • Previous experience of working autonomously to make comprehensive decisions
  • Experience of MDT working
  • Skills in coordinating and planning inter-agency approaches in mental health care
  • Experience of delivering evidence based treatments
  • Experience of leadership and delivering supervision to junior members of staff

Desirable
  • Involvement with service development and change management initiatives

Skills
Essential
  • Ability to use initiative and work without immediate supervision
  • Ability to clinically lead, supervise and direct a team and support staff as appropriate
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage team capacity according to demand
  • Skills in co-ordinating and planning interagency approaches in mental health care
  • An understanding of current mental health issues relating to the provision of Mental Health Liaison Services
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge, understanding and practical experience of risk assessment and risk management
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills relating to the post
  • Knowledge and understanding of the legislative framework for mental health services, particularly the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act Demonstrate excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrate an ability to make balanced clinical judgments and decisions
  • Excellent report-writing skills
  • Demonstrate an ability to cope with the expectations, pressures and demands of this post
  • Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with colleagues from a range of different professional backgrounds and across professional and organisational boundaries
