Description

Job summary
An exciting opportunity has been created at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre (a purpose-built centre with 39 NHSE funded beds for the rehabilitation of patients with Spinal Cord Injury) for a motivated doctor to utilise their medical skills in a stimulating and rewarding area of practice.

The Centre aims to provide total care of the spinal cord injured patients, from the acute management through rehabilitation to long term follow up. Around 100 new patients are typically admitted each year, and around 1800+ patients are followed up through the outpatient clinics.

Experience in rehabilitation settings and spinal cord injury is essential and a wide range of medical experience is very relevant to this patient group, which is trending towards increased age and co-morbidities.

Main duties of the job
The appointee will be part of a small team of consultants/SAS doctors, and expected to undertake the general management of the spinal cord injured patients.

This includes:
  • The outreach advice, plan of care and support of patients with SCI prior to their admission to Spinal Centre.
  • The admission and treatment of adults with traumatic spinal cord injuries and non-progressive spinal diseases causing paraplegia and tetraplegia according to the national SCI standards of care.
  • Intensive MDT rehabilitation programmes to facilitate the patient's return to his/her own community as soon as recovery is consistent with an optimal level of activity.
  • Providing the ventilatory support of patients with spinal cord injuries where appropriate in the acute setting and if this proves to be required permanently, as part of a domiciliary package.
  • Planning the discharge process that is overseen by a discharge coordinator and deputy.
  • Providing a life-long care programme for patients throughout their lives utilising the national framework for follow-up consultations.
  • Supporting readmissions for surgical interventions through the close links with the Urology, plastic and colorectal Department

This role will primarily be involved with the in-patient rehabilitation part of the service.
