Job summaryThe appointment of Senior Clinical Fellow in Aortic Surgery is to commence from 03 August 2026, for a fixed term period of 12 months from the date of commencement. The post does not award a National Training Number. This post is not recognised as a training post. Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to ST7 training or appropriate to an individual holding a Certificate of Completion of Training.
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual in the later stages of their training who wishes to further develop their experience in the management of patients with aortic conditions and complex aortic surgical procedures.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidates will have the opportunity to extend their own experience in aorto-vascular disease, be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, be involved in operating sessions (with focus in aortic procedures), wards, ITU, OPD, aorto-vascular MDT and research projects. The candidate will not take part to the on-call rota.
The appointee will spend 12 months at the Trust in order to undertake cardiac surgery and research work. There is flexibility in this arrangement in order meet the educational requirements of the Fellow.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of application
- Basic Medical Degree
- MRCS or equivalent
Desirable- ALS
- ATLS
- Post-graduation in cardiac surgery (FRCS or equivalent)
Clinical experienceEssential- A minimum of 4 years in a specialty training programme in Cardiothoracic Surgery or as a fixed term specialty trainee in the specialty
- Aortic interest / experience (first assistant/operator for major aortic cases, management of pre-and post-operative aortic patients)
- Experience as first operator for CABG and AVR
- ST7 and above or equivalent
ResearchEssential- Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate/Basic understanding of research methods and statistics
Desirable- Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
Management and AdministrationDesirable- Management training course
Clinical Governance and AuditDesirable- Documented completed audits during training
Personal AttributesEssential- Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values (see appendix)
- Good written communication skills
- The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC' good medical practice (2013).
