Job summaryApplications are invited for the post of Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Sunderland Royal Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to join a skilled, experienced and supportive team delivering high-quality emergency care for children and young people across the region and contributing to the ongoing development of the Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) service within South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
We are seeking a clinician with a CCT, or equivalent, in Paediatrics, together with subspecialty training in PEM, or evidence of equivalent experience and competencies. The successful candidate will be based within the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED), providing expert clinical care and supporting safe, effective and compassionate services.
As part of an established consultant workforce, you will play a key role in timely senior decision-making, service development and patient pathway improvement. The role includes responsibilities for education, training, clinical governance, audit and supervision of junior doctors and multidisciplinary colleagues.

Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will play a key role in delivering a high-quality, consultant-led Paediatric Emergency Medicine service, providing expert assessment, diagnosis and management of children and young people presenting with acute illness and injury. Working within a busy Paediatric Emergency Department, they will support timely senior decision-making and contribute to excellent patient outcomes and experience.
The postholder will assess and manage emergency presentations, facilitating referral to appropriate specialties, inpatient teams, community services and tertiary centres where required. Working collaboratively across professional and organisational boundaries, they will help ensure patient-centred care pathways.
As a senior clinician, the successful candidate will provide leadership, supervision and support to junior doctors and the wider multidisciplinary team, promoting a culture of learning and continuous improvement. They will work closely with colleagues across the Trust to support safe care and patient flow.
The role includes responsibility for Clinical Quality Indicators and participation in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities. Opportunities are available to teach and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
The department is research active and recognised for excellence in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training, offering opportunities to participate in research, education and service development.

Job responsibilitiesA Hospital Consultant has continuous responsibility for any patient under their care.
Final job plans will be agreed in discussion between the successful candidates and the Clinical Director and will be subject to Annual Review.
There will be the opportunity to revise the fixed procedural sessional timetable to accommodate other commitments of the appointee. The postholder is expected to attend regular departmental Consultant meetings (every 2 weeks) and Operational Meetings (every two months).
The post holder will be expected to develop the service in keeping with national guidance and the Local Modernisation and Reform Group priorities/targets.
Consultant performance is monitored within the Directorate and strong emphasis is given to personal career development.

Person SpecificationTeaching and EducationEssential- Experience of supervising junior medical staff
- Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
