Job summaryWe are seeking a dynamic and experienced Practice Nurse to join our friendly team. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality nursing care, including both chronic disease management and treatment room services.
The Drayton Surgery is a well-established, forward-thinking GP practice located in Drayton, North Portsmouth, with a second site in Cosham. We have a strong reputation for delivering high-quality patient care and offer a full range of NHS and enhanced services.
We serve a growing patient population of approximately 24,000 patients across both sites. Our multidisciplinary team includes GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs), Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants (HCAs), and Phlebotomists, all working together in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Main duties of the jobMain Duties of the Job- Deliver high standards of nursing care as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Provide treatment room services, including wound care and minor procedures
- Undertake chronic disease management (e.g. asthma, COPD, diabetes)
- Administer routine childhood, adult, and travel immunisations
- Carry out cervical screening (smears)
- Contribute to health promotion and preventative care initiatives

Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesDetailed Job Description and Main ResponsibilitiesThe Practice Nurse will work as part of the primary healthcare team, delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
Clinical Responsibilities- Chronic disease management, including asthma, COPD, and diabetes
- Cervical cytology (HPV screening)
- Wound care, leg ulcer management, and Doppler assessments
- Venepuncture and phlebotomy
- ECG recording
- New patient health checks and urinalysis
- Suture and clip removal
- Administration of injectable medications (e.g. B12, Depo, Nebido, Clexane, Zoladex)
- Delivery of routine and childhood immunisations (including flu, shingles, pneumococcal vaccines)
- Requesting basic pathology tests (e.g. urine cultures, swabs)
- Working to agreed clinical protocols and escalating to GPs where appropriate
Additional Responsibilities- Maintain clinical rooms, ensuring appropriate stock levels and cleanliness
- Ensure compliance with cold chain processes for vaccines
- Undertake regular checks of emergency equipment
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records
- Report risks, incidents, or concerns to senior staff
- Participate in practice meetings, training, and continuous professional development
- Support administrative systems within the practice
- Undertake home or care home visits where required (e.g. vaccination delivery)
Person SpecificationGeneralEssential- Participation in training and professional development is essential
- Flexibility to cover both practice sites will be required
ExperienceEssential- Minimum of 3 years experience working within a nursing team
- Previous experience working in a GP practice
Desirable- Experience using SystmOne or other clinical IT systems
QualificationsEssential- Registered Nurse with the NMC.
- Qualified in giving childhood and routine vaccinations
- Qualified in Cervical Smear taker
- Qualified in Leg Ulcer and Doppler assessment
- Qualified or experience in chronic disease management (asthma, COPD, diabetes)
Desirable- Travel vaccination qualification
- Mentorship
