Nurse PractitionerClosing date: 19 July 2026Job summaryWe are seeking an experienced and motivated Nurse Practitioner to join our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) team to cover maternity leave. This role offers the opportunity to work autonomously within an acute setting, delivering high-quality, patient-centred care using established clinical pathways and guidelines.
The successful candidate will assess, diagnose, and manage patients presenting with a wide range of acute conditions, while also providing leadership, acting as a role model, and supporting the development of junior staff and ward teams.
Main duties of the jobYou will be responsible for- Independently assessing, taking history, and perform clinical examinations for patients presenting with acute and varied conditions
- Work within established clinical pathways and protocols to guide clinical decision-making
- Order and interpret appropriate investigations in line with pathway-based care
- Formulate and implement safe, evidence-based management plans
- Escalate and discuss complex cases with senior clinicians or specialty teams when indicated
- Prescribe medications safely and appropriately in line with diagnosis and agreed treatment pathways
- Recognise and respond to clinical deterioration appropriately
- Facilitate safe discharge or admission in line with clinical pathways
- Complete clear and comprehensive discharge documentation, including diagnosis, investigations, and management plans
- Coordinate outpatient investigations, ensuring timely follow-up, review of results, and appropriate action
- Communicate effectively with GPs and specialty teams, ensuring continuity of care and clear management plans
- Demonstrate strong time management and prioritisation skills, managing patient flow and acutely unwell patients effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Actively participate in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement initiatives when opportunities arise.
- Support ward sisters and the wider nursing/medical team, contributing to safe and effective patient car

Job PurposeThe Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group e.g. H@N, pre assessment.
To deliver a quality of service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice:
- To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care.
- Working as a nurse practitioner, provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need.
- Manage own caseload to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined parameters and training.
- Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others.
- Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g. AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team.
- Liaising with Patient Services Coordinator where necessary.
- Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward/departmental staff and/or out of hours team.
- Provide specialist education and training to departmental nursing staff, nursing and medical students.
Person SpecificationQualifications & EducationEssential- oRegistered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
- oCurrent NMC registration
- oDegree/Masters level study, or equivalent specialist study / experience e.g. oNurse Practitioner Qualification or equivalent oClinical Skills Course
Desirable- oMaster's degree
- oManagement experience / qualification
- oHas undertaken and completed Non-medical independent nurse prescribing course
Knowledge & ExperienceEssential- oMeets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role
- oEvidence of on-going continuous professional development
- oKnowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
- oHas understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
- oRecent experience of extended clinical practice in a senior role underpinned by training and assessment e.g. venepuncture, cannulation skills and intravenous drug administration
- oAudit / research experience
