Job summary
We are currently recruiting for experienced Band 5 Registered Nurses with post-preceptorship experience for our busy but friendly Haematology Ward.

We look after patients with different haematology conditions such as sickle cell disease, haemophilia, leukemia, and lymphomas. The ward manages complex treatments and regimes where you develop excellent time management skills and are able to develop your nursing skills.

Our Registered Nurses take great pride in providing quality and compassionate patient care. These roles are essential to the experience of our patients and their relatives and carers, and they complement the clinical care provided by our multi-disciplinary team of doctors and therapists. In addition, band 5 assists in quality initiatives, supports more junior staff and takes a leading role within the department.

Successful candidates must have post-preceptorship experience.

Please note this post is not suitable for applicants who are required to undertake the OSCE training programme. Applicants who do not have current valid UK NMC registration will not be considered for this post.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job
Plan the delivery of patient care and take responsibility for implementing and evaluating that care, using an appropriate nursing model. To provide advice and education to patients, staff and learners within the directorate as required. To develop communication networks across specialities and throughout the multidisciplinary team. To be able to prioritise their own workload and of those working with them such as learners and Healthcare Assistants. Conduct nursing care to the highest possible standard according to Trust Policies and Practice and Clinical Guidelines. This requires a thorough understanding of policies and guidance related to for example: infection control, hygiene, and individualised patient needs. To administer oral and intravenous medication, chemotherapy, blood transfusions and blood products to patients according to Trust Policy after completing required competences. The post holder will have a comprehensive knowledge of nursing and will be able to care for a patient from admission to discharge.

Job responsibilities
  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times
  • Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team including situations where difficulties in comprehension occur
  • A competent practitioner, teaching, assessing and supervising/providing mentorship to appropriate students or junior staff
  • Responsible for administering chemotherapy treatment in accordance with the trust policy. Training is provided
  • Managing invasive devices i.e. Central, Hickman, and Picc lines in accordance with trust policy and supervision. Training is provided
  • Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated, involving patients and users
  • Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities to support patient care pathways
  • Demonstrate technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient care management including; patient observations; equipment management and administration of agreed invasive tests/procedures
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise information and IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data
  • Manage expected (and occasional unexpected) clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need, referring to a senior member of staff where appropriate e.g. in an unexpected event
  • Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected event
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.

Person Specification

Qualifications
  • Essential: Current Professional Registration
  • Diploma/degree in Nursing
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Completion of first year preceptorship programme
  • Desirable: Teaching and Assessing qualification
  • Chemotherapy administration qualification

Experience
  • Essential: Professional Clinical experience
  • Post-Preceptorship experience
  • Desirable: Ability to successfully manage people and change

Knowledge
