Job summary
As an Experienced Nurse, you will provide high-quality clinical care to patients with complex mental health needs within an acute hospital setting, including a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). You will take responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing, and reviewing patient care, working as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure treatment is safe, effective, and recovery-focused. The role includes managing risk, responding to incidents, and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment at all times. You will also support the leadership of the ward, guiding and mentoring junior staff, and ensuring that standards of care, documentation, and communication are consistently met. You will be expected to work both independently and as part of a team, using your clinical judgement, experience, and knowledge of mental health legislation to support patient outcomes.

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver safe, effective nursing care to patients with complex mental health needs
  • Carry out assessments, develop care plans, and review patient progress
  • Administer and manage medication in line with clinical guidance
  • Identify, assess, and manage risk to maintain a safe environment
  • Support and lead ward staff, providing guidance, supervision, and mentorship
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver coordinated care
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical records and documentation
  • Respond to incidents, emergencies, and changes in patient presentation
  • Promote patient engagement, recovery, and independence
  • Ensure high standards of handover and communication across shifts
  • Support compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
  • Contribute to maintaining a structured, safe, and therapeutic ward environment

The service includes a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), supporting individuals who require higher levels of observation, risk management, and clinical intervention. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team including nursing, psychiatry, psychology, and allied health professionals, working together to deliver structured, recovery-focused care in a safe and therapeutic environment.

Job responsibilities
Location: Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire, LE65 2PJ
Hours: 40 hours per week (shift-based rota including days, nights, weekends, and public holidays)
Salary: £21.15 per hour

About the Role

About You
  • You are a registered nurse (RMN, RNLD, or RGN with relevant mental health experience) with current NMC registration.
  • You have experience working within acute mental health or PICU settings and are confident managing complex presentations, risk, and challenging behaviour.
  • You are calm under pressure, able to lead by example, and confident in supporting and directing others.
  • You understand the importance of structure, consistency, and professional boundaries within a clinical environment.
  • You communicate clearly, maintain accurate records, and take accountability for your practice.
