Salary: The salary is based on your nodal point on the MN37 payscale. The banding for this job is currently 50%.

Barts Health NHS Trust is offering two prestigious Post-CCT Complex Spine Fellowship positions within our world-class Complex Spine Unit. This is a rare opportunity to join one of the UK's leading tertiary centres for complex adult and paediatric spinal surgery, based at The Royal London Hospital and Newham General Hospital.
We are looking for senior orthopaedic spine surgeons who share our values of care, compassion, and excellence. You'll work alongside a high-performing, multidisciplinary team led by renowned Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Spine Consultants, serving a diverse patient population across the North East London Spine Network.

Main duties of the job
What you'll gain:
  • Intensive exposure to complex adult & paediatric spine surgery, including scoliosis, trauma, and advanced elective procedures.
  • Dedicated mentorship from leading UK spine surgeons.
  • Opportunities to lead MDTs, supervise trainees, and contribute to service development.
  • Protected time for research, with expectations to present at national/international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Flexible training focus tailored to your career goals, with regular progress reviews.

What we're looking for:
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Post-CCT (or within 3 months of CCT at the time of application).
  • Substantial experience as a Senior Orthopaedic Spine Registrar.
  • Strong background in complex spine surgery, trauma, and elective care.
  • Ability to work effectively in a large, multidisciplinary team

Person Specification
Higher Qualifications
Essential
  • CCT or on specialist register
  • Success in an intercollegiate specialty examination or equivalent
  • GMC registration with a license to practice
  • Evidence of experience and training in trauma & Spinal surgery
Desirable
  • Evidence of participation in research: Peer reviewed publications
  • Presentation at Conferences
  • Audit projects
  • Service improvement projects

Qualifications
Essential
  • FRCS (T&O) or equivalent

Knowledge
Essential
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on range of elective & emergency problems within specialty
Desirable
  • ATLS instructor

Clinical expertise in Spine Surgery
Essential
  • Ability to perform Spine surgery procedures under supervision
Desirable
  • Evidence of past training in Spine Surgery
  • Evidence of past training in scoliosis surgery

Training Expected
Essential
  • Higher Specialist Training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
Desirable
  • Previous Fellowship experience

Management/Audit Experience
Essential
  • Audit experience
  • Ability to advise on efficient & smooth running of a specialist service and to organise & manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting & operating lists
  • Experience of supervising doctors in training and in teaching clinical & operative skills
Desirable
  • Experience of leading on audit projects
  • Experience in developing Spine Service pathways
  • Spine Surgery improvement projects
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates

Academic Achievements
Essential
  • Experience of research, presentations to learned societies on topics related to surgery
Desirable
  • Higher Degree

Research/Publications
Essential
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical/surgical problems Publications in indexed journals
Desirable
  • Ability to supervise and lead on postgraduate research
