Job summary
Band 4 Medical Secretary working within Urgent & Emergency Care (U&EC). This role is to be based at the Cumberland Infirmary.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the U&EC Secretarial team. The service aims to provide a high quality, locally delivered, patient focussed services for those attending our Emergency Department (ED), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Acute Medical Unit (AMU) areas.

This role will be crucial to the efficient day to day delivery of the service.

We are looking for a competent and professional Medical Secretary to be based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. This is a permeant position.

Main duties of the job
In this role you will often be the first point of contact for our patients therefore a professional, patient focused approach is key at all times. You will provide a high standard of administration support to the clinical team, liaising with other departments, patients, NHS Trusts and external agencies.

You should be educated to GCSE (minimum C Grade) standard, be trained to RSA level 3 standard and/or an NVQ level 3 in Administration and/or have the equivalent experience, preferably having a medical administration background.

We are looking for someone with a pleasant, adaptable disposition who can remain calm under pressure and deal with a busy workload efficiently and effectively

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required as well as a positive approach to working in a team.

Knowledge and Experience
Essential
  • Computer literate.
  • Medical terminology.
  • Microsoft Office. .
  • PAS.
  • Understanding of the requirements of the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act, access to health records and defensible documentation, health and safety legislation, and their application in the workplace.
  • Equality issues
  • Medical secretarial duties.
  • Medical audio typing
  • Operating word processing and computer packages

Qualifications
Essential
  • GCSE English language (minimum grade C) or equivalent.
  • RSA 3 typewriting / word processing, or NVQ3 business administration, or equivalent.

Desirable
  • Medical secretarial diploma or equivalent.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to analyse complex facts or situations.
  • Able to use initiative appropriately within team environment
