Oxford Children's Hospital (part of Oxford University Healthcare Trust) is the Primary Treatment Centre (PCT) for children with cancer in the Thames Valley Region. Kamran's Ward comprises a 9 bedded inpatient ward and a busy day care facility. It is supported by our team of Paediatric Oncology Outreach Nurses who visit local patients in their homes and several Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units throughout the Thames Valley.

Main duties of the job
The role holder will spend their time in clinical practice working within the well established Band 6 clinical team to: Provide clinical leadership ensuring a high standard of individualised nursing and family centred care is delivered to critically ill children. Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, communicating effectively with all levels of medical and nursing staff across the Trust and within the Thames Valley Network. Job responsibilities
Clinical Practice:The post holder will:Demonstrate and promote a family centred style of clinical practice.Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care from admission to discharge.Respond calmly to emergency situations, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, and supporting the child, family and other staff as required.Offer supervision and assistance to Nurses less familiar to the speciality, acting as a named nurse recognising own limitations and seeking help appropriately.As negotiated with Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, set and maintain standards of practice, conduct and decision making.Accurately document and report to other members of the nursing team and multidisciplinary team information regarding the care given to children, communicating changes as they occur.Identify and discuss nursing /child needs with team/ ward staff, parents, carers and the multi-disciplinary team. Be able to plan own workload.Adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct at all times and practice within the NMC Scope of Professional practice, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.Adhere to the data protection act.Demonstrate a problem solving approach to effectively execute planning,implementation and evaluation of individualised plans of care based on a holistic model of care.Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Accountability, Responsibility and Duty of Care and work towards the provision of support and education for junior staffon the implications for practice.Effectively communicate with all children, visitors and colleagues in order to promote their comfort and wellbeing, demonstrating awareness of barriers to communication and understanding, i.e. deafness and different languages.Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times.Leadership and Management:The post holder will:Develop skills to act as Ward Team Co-ordinator in rotation with other staff, participating in the allocation of workload and ensuring efficient bed management and effective patient care.Carry the Childrens Hospital bleep regularly to support the smooth running of the wider services within the hospital ensuring safe staffing levels and timely provision of care.Lead on ward projects and audits as directed by Ward Manager or deputies.Be accountable for some specific responsibilities that contribute toward the organisational and administrative work of the ward.Ensure equipment supplies, disposables and staffing resources are usedappropriately when prescribing and implementing care and treatments.Report untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or drug administration errors as detailed in ward and Trust protocols and procedures, aid the ward manager in investigating incidents as required.Demonstrate an awareness of health and safety regulations that apply to staff and patients in the clinical area and compliance with the procedures.Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with team leaders/ward manager/unit co-ordinator.Discuss personal and professional development needs during an annual appraisal with Team Leader and developing, agreeing and documenting action points in personal development plan.Be responsible for a team of Nurses professional development by offering appraisal, clinical supervision and guidance.Ensure that staff present a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and the professionalism of its staffEducation and Training:The post holder will:Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and maintain registration in line with NMC requirementsBe actively involved in, and support the ward education programme and clinical resource groups.Complete or be working towards agreed local and Trust competency frameworks within a time frame agreed with the Ward Manager and with the support of a named mentor.Supervise, mentor, support and educate junior nurses in the clinical practice setting.

Education, training and experience
Essential

• Registered Children's Nurse (UK recognised qualification)
• SACT Competent
• Minimum of 2 years acute care registered nurse experience or evidence of ongoing professional development (e.g. Oncology course, PCC course, Neuro course)
• Degree level study
• Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

• Post-graduate qualification relevant to an area of practice
• Evidence of commitment to teaching staff and students, including mentorship qualification or practice assessor training
• Ability to facilitate and participate in research/benchmark and audit programmes

Clinical practice and leadership
Essential

• Ability to manage and run the ward within the boundaries of the role through effective communication and initiatives
• Experience of leading and supporting a team in clinical area
• Ability to lead the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice

Desirable

• Knowledge/experience of: - audit in practice - implementation of quality improvement measures - risk management
