Job summary
Spectrum is a not-for-profit CIC committed to reducing health inequalities and improving health outcomes for the most disadvantaged within our community. We are a values-based company with the patient at the heart of what we do. We aim to achieve quantifiable impact and are looking for GPs who are committed to our cause to join us. We are looking for a salaried GP to join our MDT consisting of a variety of allied healthcare professionals (mental health workers, pharmacists, ANPs etc.) to deliver a primary care clinic within HMP Forest Bank. A session consists of 8 appointments (15 mins long) and are face to face. Presentations are as with community primary care as we are aiming to deliver 'equivalence of care' within our clinics. No prior prison experience is required as you will given the training required for the role although prior experience is preferable. Are you the right fit for this role? The GP most suited to this role is someone passionate about reducing health inequalities, empathetic, and enjoys working within an MDT. You will need leadership qualities and ready to explore a different, lesser known but more paced form of primary care.

Main duties of the job
GP's are required to provide reception cover from 5pm-9pm Monday to Friday (to be discussed).

The post holder will provide face-to-face clinical services including the medical component of prison reception assessment care, appointed, unscheduled and emergency care services to inpatient and segregation unit. Clinical services will include the following core responsibilities: Full clinical assessment of patients; Ability to formulate differential diagnosis and management plans; Pharmacological assessment and prescribing; Request and interpretation of clinical investigations; Appropriate referral on and follow up to other specialist areas and secondary care services; Information and advice and facilitation of informed choice for ongoing treatment and care; Medical assessment and monitoring of chronic diseases in accordance with NICE guidance and local clinical policy; Appropriate end of life care under clinical supervision from palliative care specialist services where needed. All GPs are expected to have an up to date working knowledge of the underpinning evidence base and clinical capabilities needed to formulate robust care plans to meet the full range of complex health needs of vulnerable groups with an emphasis on the substance misuse and offender health delivered in the secure environment setting. Psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and management of prisoners with serious mental ill health will be the responsibility of the specialist mental health provider.

Job responsibilities
All GPs including the Lead GP are expected to support the general healthcare needs and basic clinical monitoring when the prisoners psychiatric condition is stable.

We understand this can be daunting if you have no prior experience working in a prison clinic. We offer taster days for interest GPs and for more information a chance to speak to our GPs for advice an honest discussion on realities of the job. Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • UK recognised medical qualification
  • Recognised Certificate of Vocational Training
  • Education of ongoing professional development in the relevant clinical and service improvement areas

Desirable
  • Higher specialist qualifications or extensive relevant experience
  • Current accreditation at GPwSI level in specialist area
  • RCGP Certificate Part 1 Substance Misuse
  • Harm minimisation and management of bloodborne viruses
  • Sexual health
  • Specialist Substance Misuse

Knowledge
Essential
  • Primary care mental health
  • Basic drug and alcohol awareness
  • Chronic disease management
  • Understanding of current health and social policy particularly offender health
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and governance
  • Principles of substance misuse treatment and pharmacotherapy

Desirable
  • Understanding of principles & research
  • Demonstrated breadth of knowledge in and outside this specialist area
  • Understanding of NHS clinical governance/GP contracts/medicines management and resource constraints/financial management
  • Up-to-date on new GP and pharmacy contracts
