Clinical Fellow in Vascular and Emergency General SurgeryThe closing date is 18 August 2026Job summaryRole OverviewWe are delighted to announce the recruitment of a Vascular Surgery/ General Surgery Clinical Fellow to our highly competitive programme. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract based at University Hospitals Dorset.
Eligibility and ExperienceApplicants should have recent experience in vascular surgery at University Hospitals Dorset within the last two years. A strong interest in vascular surgery, together with relevant clinical experience in emergency general surgery, is essential.
Clinical RequirementsCandidates should be confident in managing emergency general surgical conditions and performing common procedures, including laparoscopic appendicectomy. The successful applicant should be able to perform at least at the level of a year one general surgical registrar.

Person SpecificationQualifications and trainingEssential- MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- MRCS or equivalent.
- Current ATLS certification.
Desirable- FRCS or progress towards higher surgical qualification.
ExperienceEssential- Recent experience in a vascular surgical department at University Hospitals Dorset within the last two years.
- Relevant experience in vascular surgery.
- Experience in emergency general surgery.
- Understanding of Clinical Risk Management
Desirable- Middle-grade general surgical on-call experience.
- Demonstrates breadth of experience and awareness of other medical or surgical specialities
Clinical and technical skillsEssential- Demonstrable ability to function safely and effectively as a general surgery registrar on the on-call rota.
- Broad clinical experience at registrar level in surgery, including teaching responsibilities.
- Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate
- Good manual dexterity and hand / eye co-ordination
- Ability to insert a surgical chest drain confidently, safely, and without supervision
CommunicationEssential- Able to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, relatives and colleagues.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable- Evidence of leadership within clinical teams.
