Job summaryWe currently have a part-time vacancy for an experienced Medical Receptionist, working 30 hours per week over 4 to 5 days.
The successful applicant will need to be flexible and able to work a combination of morning and afternoon shifts between 7:30am and 6:30pm, in line with practice requirements. Flexibility is essential, as you may also be required to provide additional cover for staff sickness and annual leave, sometimes at short notice.

Main duties of the jobNorth Shore Surgery is looking for an intelligent, self-motivated individual with a positive and friendly approach to join our busy, well-organised team.
Previous experience in a primary care setting is desirable, although applicants with strong transferable skills and a willingness to learn will also be considered. The successful candidate will be computer literate, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and demonstrate a high level of professionalism at all times.
Attention to detail and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality are essential requirements of the role. Knowledge of
EMIS Web would be a distinct advantage.
The post-holder will be primarily based within our reception team and will play a key role in supporting patients and the wider practice. This is a varied and sometimes demanding role within a fast-paced environment. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate the ability to prioritise their workload effectively, adapt quickly to changing demands, and learn new skills with confidence.
We are looking for someone who uses initiative, applies common sense, works well as part of a team, and brings a good sense of humour to the workplace. The successful candidate will be expected to attend relevant training courses and participate in practice meetings as part of their ongoing professional development.

As an active member of the North Primary Care Network (PCN), we benefit from access to an extended healthcare team, enabling us to offer a wider range of services and support to our patients. Through the PCN, we work closely with Care Co-ordinators, First Contact Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacists, Social Prescribers, GP Assistants, and a Digital Lead, ensuring patients receive the right care from the right professional at the right time.
Job responsibilitiesAs a member of our reception team, you will be responsible for receiving, assisting, and directing patients to the most appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient, and effective manner.
As the first point of contact for patients and visitors, you will present a professional, positive, and welcoming image of North Shore Surgery, whether communicating face-to-face, by telephone, or through other communication channels.
The role includes a variety of reception and associated administrative duties, which may vary on a daily basis and include, but are not limited to:
- Receiving and assisting patients with appointments and enquiries
- Answering telephone calls and managing patient queries appropriately
- Signposting patients to the most suitable healthcare professional or service
- Processing district nurse referrals
- Creating and submitting electronic referral and investigation forms (including cyber forms)
- Processing requests and tasks from clinical staff
- Accurately inputting and maintaining patient data
- Supporting general reception and administrative functions to ensure the smooth running of the practice
The successful applicant will be expected to work proactively within a busy environment, maintaining high standards of accuracy, confidentiality, and customer service at all times.
All staff have a responsibility to promote and safeguard the welfare of any child, young person, or adult at risk with whom they come into contact during the course of their work. The post-holder will be expected to adhere to the practice's safeguarding policies and procedures and undertake any mandatory safeguarding training required for the role.
Person SpecificationExperienceEssential- Experience of working in a GP practice or primary care setting.
- Experience of dealing with the public both face to face and on the telephone.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent keyboard and computer skills.
Desirable- Experience of using a clinical computerised database system.
- Experience of Microsoft office software.
