Band 3 Phlebotomist (Band 2-3 Development Post) Part-time: 17.5 hours per week | Variable roster

We are looking for a reliable, caring and flexible Phlebotomist to join our friendly pathology team.

You will provide an important service across the hospital, taking blood samples from inpatients, outpatients and community patients.

The role is 17.5 hours per week on a variable roster. The service operates 7 days a week, with shifts provided at least 6 weeks in advance. Fixed working days cannot be accommodated.

You should be courteous, responsible and able to work under pressure, follow procedures and use your own initiative. The role involves significant walking, standing and bending, so a good level of fitness is required.

Experience is not essential, as full training is provided, although recent healthcare or customer service experience is desirable.

This is a Band 2-3 development post. You will start at Band 2 for 12 months and progress to Band 3 following successful completion of the required competencies.

A reliable car is required, as some work takes place at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust community sites.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be an experienced Phlebotomist who will work as part of a team to provide an efficient, effective and high quality blood sample collection service to the wards and clinics of Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, outlying clinics, or at a location that provides a service by Royal Surrey Hospital.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will be a trained and competent phlebotomist with experience in a health care setting and will carry out duties to include wards, clinics and GP surgery based work or any other department deemed necessary. This will involve routinely handling biological samples and it is therefore essential that he/she is aware of the departmental safety policies which must be observed at all times.

The post holder will be required to perform a range of venepuncture techniques in a variety of clinical settings and will work without direct supervision. The post holder will be assessed on their practical skills and knowledge base and must have reached competency equivalent to QCF Level 3 Unit 4223/340 Obtain A Venous Blood Sample (HSC 3053).

The work requires flexible approach to hours of employment. The department operates 7 days a week. You will also be required to cover some Bank Holidays

Qualifications

• Venepuncture certificate or evidence of Phlebotomy training
• Evidence of acceptable equivalent to QCF or higher
• The post holder will be assessed on their practical skills and knowledge base and must have reached competency equivalent to QCF Level 3 Unit 4223/340 Obtain A Venous Blood Sample (HSC 3053).

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

• Basic numeracy and language skills
• Previous phlebotomy experience in a healthcare environment
• Knowledge of relevant Medical Terminology
• Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology
• To demonstrate the ability to collect blood samples correctly.
